For the most part, some things are just easily done- I mean, the Stones can afford to have a real horn section play behind them instead of tapes (and I'm not forgetting Bobby Keys, but one sax is not a horn section, lol), bands can add another guitar fairly easily, or backing vocalists. I can't imagine hearing Van Halen's "jump" with out the synth intro- changes the whole song, IMO. But I also understand their are circumstances where those parts are of a type where it would be problematic to reproduce them with live musicians (Bohemian Rhapsody comes to mind) and the use of tape is okay for me, because you HAVE to hear that part. REM used extra guys to get their sound and it wasn't 'weird" seeing them on stage, it just sounded good. And I would also like to see the musicians playing that part, regardless of whether they are "in the band" or not. For me, at any show, if the song being played has a key part that "makes" the song, I need to hear that part no matter what.
